Prayer
Yahweh (God),
help us remain steady when obedience becomes difficult. When resistance rises and the path feels harder than expected, remind us that struggle does not always mean we are outside of Your will.
Holy Spirit, strengthen our focus, increase our faith, and teach us to trust You in the middle of storms we do not understand.
In Yeshua’s name, Amen.
Introduction
One of the most discouraging feelings is doing what you believe Yahweh told you to do…
and still running into resistance.
You prayed first.
You tried to obey.
You made the hard decision.
And instead of things getting easier:
the wind got stronger.
That can create a dangerous question in your mind:
“Did I miss God somewhere?”
Because many people assume:
-
obedience should remove difficulty
-
faithfulness should prevent struggle
-
storms must mean something is wrong
But Scripture shows something different.
Sometimes:
you can be completely in Yahweh’s will…
and still find yourself in a storm.
Scripture Exploration (NRSV)
Matthew 14:22–24
Yeshua tells the disciples to get into the boat and go ahead of Him across the water. While obeying His instruction, they encounter strong winds and resistance.
Matthew 14:27 (key line)
“Take courage… do not be afraid.”
In the middle of the storm, Yeshua speaks peace before He changes the situation.
Matthew 14:29–31
Peter steps out of the boat and begins walking on the water toward Yeshua. But when his focus shifts to the storm, fear grows and he begins to sink.
1 Samuel 17:26 (summary)
While everyone else focused on Goliath’s size, David focused on the fact that Goliath stood without Yahweh’s covering. His perspective changed his response.
Deep Dive
The disciples were not in that storm because they were rebellious.
They were there because they obeyed.
That matters.
Because sometimes we quietly assume:
if life becomes difficult, we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere.
But in this account, the storm happens:
-
while they are obeying
-
while they are moving where Yeshua sent them
-
while they are still in His will
And not only is there resistance…
there’s also darkness.
The passage takes place during the fourth watch of the night—between roughly 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.—the darkest part before morning.
That’s powerful imagery.
Because some seasons feel exactly like that:
-
you’re trying to move forward
-
the wind feels contrary
-
progress feels slow
-
and clarity feels limited
But then Yeshua comes walking on the very thing threatening them.
The storm itself becomes the place where His presence is revealed.
And Peter does something the others do not:
He steps out.
Not because the storm stopped.
Not because conditions improved.
But because he trusted the voice calling him forward.
That’s important.
Faith is not pretending storms are small.
Faith is refusing to let the storm become bigger than the Savior.
Key Terms
Obedience - Following Yahweh’s direction even when outcomes are uncertain.
Resistance - Opposition, difficulty, or pressure encountered while moving forward.
Focus - What your attention remains fixed on during difficult situations.
Faith - Trust in Yahweh’s presence and direction despite uncertainty.
Fear - The emotional response that grows when circumstances become greater in our focus than Yahweh.
Spiritual Endurance - Remaining steady and aligned through difficulty instead of giving up.
Relatable Scenario
You finally make the decision to do what you know is right.
You stop ignoring conviction.
You move forward in obedience.
You try to align your life with Yahweh honestly.
And almost immediately:
-
resistance shows up
-
pressure increases
-
things become harder emotionally
You expected peace.
Instead, you found a storm.
And now you’re wondering:
“Why does obedience feel harder than compromise did?”
Core Message
-
Being in a storm does not automatically mean you are outside of Yahweh’s will.
-
Resistance is not always rejection.
-
Focus determines whether fear grows or faith remains steady.
Life Stories
There are seasons where obedience feels rewarding immediately.
And then there are seasons where obedience feels like rowing against the wind.
You keep trying to move forward:
-
but progress feels slow
-
answers feel delayed
-
and circumstances push back against you
And if you’re not careful, discouragement starts whispering:
-
“Maybe this isn’t working.”
-
“Maybe you heard wrong.”
-
“Maybe you should go back.”
But sometimes the resistance isn’t proof you missed Yahweh.
Sometimes:
it’s proof you actually stepped out of the boat.
.
Common Experiences

-
Wondering if difficulty means you missed Yahweh
-
Losing focus because of overwhelming circumstances
-
Feeling emotionally tired while trying to remain obedient
Everyday Challenges
-
Staying focused during uncertainty
-
Continuing to obey when results are delayed

-
Trusting Yahweh even when clarity is limited
Modern Connections
Today, people often associate difficulty with failure.
If something becomes hard:
-
it must be wrong
-
it must not be working
-
it must not be “God’s will”
But Scripture repeatedly shows something different.
Some of the greatest moments of growth, revelation, and faith happen:
in the middle of resistance—not outside of it.
Reflection & Application
Ask yourself honestly:
-
Have I mistaken resistance for rejection?
-
Where has fear started replacing focus?
-
Am I paying more attention to the storm than to Yahweh’s voice?
-
Is there an area where I need to keep stepping forward despite opposition?
This week:
Pay attention to where your focus is fixed.
Staying Anchored in Truth (Biblical Response)
Fear grows when focus shifts.
Peter did not begin sinking because Yeshua disappeared.
He began sinking because:
his focus moved from the One calling him…
to the storm around him.
Remaining steady may look like:
-
returning your attention to Yahweh daily
-
refusing to let discouragement narrate your future
-
remembering what Yahweh already told you
-
continuing forward even when the wind feels contrary
And sometimes:
faith looks like taking another step…
while the storm is still happening.
Closing Prayer
Yahweh (God),
help us remain focused on You when storms rise around us. Do not allow fear, resistance, or discouragement to pull us away from what You have called us to do.
Holy Spirit, strengthen our faith and teach us to keep moving forward even when the wind feels contrary.
In Yeshua’s name, Amen.
Further Study:

Isaiah 43:2 (summary)
-
James 1:2–4 (summary)
-
Hebrews 12:1–2 (summary)
-
Psalm 46:1–3 (summary)
Key Takeaway:
Resistance does not always mean you are outside of Yahweh’s will.
Sometimes obedience leads directly into the storm.
Concluding Thoughts:
The storm did not mean the disciples were abandoned.
Yeshua knew exactly where they were.
And sometimes the very place where:
-
fear rises
-
resistance increases
-
and progress feels hardest
becomes the place where you see Yahweh differently than ever before.
So don’t assume the storm means you missed Him.
You may still be:
exactly where He told you to go.
